Education: Arizona School of Integrative Studies, Licensed Massage Therapist-2017

Sports: Roller Derby!

Hobbies: Crafting, sewing, playing video games, and skating at the skatepark

Favorite Foods: Pretty much all food. I am very food driven.

Whom You Admire / Favorite Mentor: I admire my late grandpa for always teaching me the importance of education and also my husband for continuing to instill that idea in me.

Nickname: Ri, Riah, Mars, and my derby name, Battle

Fun Fact About You: I  am trying to learn basic Japanese and want to relearn American Sign Language because both languages are very interesting to me. My favorite part about Japanese is there is an onomatopoeia for nearly every sound you can think of. I am interested in Japanese because I really enjoy anime and manga(Japanese comics) and find the culture fascinating. Three of my four tattoos are based on the Japanese manga, Sailor Moon.

Biography: Mariah grew up in 29 Palms, California and spent most of her time in her grandparents pool, chasing lizards, and being in band in school. After high school, she left to Flagstaff, Az to be with her now husband, who was at the university, and to also go to school there. Mariah started to attend Northern Arizona University to be a speech and language pathologist, but it wasn’t what she really wanted to study for and started to look for other educational opportunities.

In mid 2016 Mariah looked into the massage therapy program at the Arizona School of Integrative Studies in Flagstaff and realized this could be what she was looking for. She studied in the program for a year and received her license for massage therapy in 2017 and has been working in the field since. Mariah held a job at a local spa in Flagstaff before graduating and stayed there until leaving for San Diego in May of 2018.

During this time in Flagstaff, Mariah found the sport of roller derby in February 2015 and played in the league until she moved to San Diego. She has joined one of the leagues here and is excited to be involved in this community again. She enjoys the sportsmanship and camaraderie that is fostered between all the different people who come to play. Her derby name is Prima Battlerina, a pun on prima ballerina, and is a nod to the fact that she danced and took ballet for a few years in college.

Mariah and her husband enjoy camping and other outdoor activities together, which lately includes her skating and him riding his bike around the bays and the beaches. They have been together since 2008, got married in Palm Springs in 2014, and have two cats, Eva and Mamas, that were rescues.

Mariah chose RU because of her want to really help people, have an affect on their bodies, and to make a difference in clients’ well-being. She is excited to have the opportunity to learn and expand her knowledge about the work that she does. She hopes to have every client feel a difference in their bodies after they leave from a session with her.
