From the Ground Up
Your feet are the foundation of your body. When the feet aren't functioning optimally, it can lead to a domino effect of pain and discomfort throughout the entire body.
Whether you’re looking to prevent injuries or enhance your daily comfort, custom orthotics can help. By providing personalized support and alignment, orthotic insoles can address a wide range of foot issues and help you move with ease.
What Kind of
Feet Do You Have?

Flat Foot
A low arch can lead to overpronation, where the foot rolls inward excessively. This can cause pain in the ankles, knees, hips, and lower back.

Normal Foot
Even a “normal” foot with a medium arch can experience pain and discomfort due to factors like poor footwear and overuse.

High-Arched Foot
A high arch can lead to underpronation, where the foot doesn’t roll inward enough. This can cause pain in the forefoot and ball of the foot.
Store-Bought vs.
True Custom Orthotics
While store-bought insoles can offer some level of support, even the “custom fit” kiosks you can find in stores don’t stack up to expert-made custom orthotics. This is because store-bought insoles only correct the rear of the foot with a lift in the heel. By doing this, they neglect to support the front of the foot (forefoot), and cannot facilitate proper foot mechanics. What does that mean for you? Your foot pain might diminish temporarily, but in the long run that pain will return. With custom orthotics, our foot experts can take into account your walking pattern (gait), individual foot structure, and lifestyle needs.

Frequently Asked Questions:
This is why we do a thorough biomechanical assessment before creating your orthotics. By understanding the “why” behind your foot pain, we create custom insoles that functionally improve how your entire body moves. This is our “from the ground up” approach; the positioning of the feet causes a chain reaction that can affect the ankles, knees, hips, spine, and even the shoulders and neck! By offering our expertise as physical therapists, we ensure your orthotic insoles are a true medical solution rather than just a temporary comfort measure.
You can get fitted for custom orthotic insoles at any Rehab United location in San Diego. With sufficient lead time, our foot and ankle specialists can meet you at any of our clinics, including Carlsbad, Escondido, Kearny Mesa, Carmel Valley, Chula Vista, Point Loma, and La Mesa.
Typically, initial visits are 30-45 minutes long. Your appointment begins with a comprehensive evaluation. During this time, your provider will perform a biomechanical assessment and gait analysis to ensure your orthotics are designed to address your specific movement patterns. Your provider will then begin taking a mold of your foot for your custom insoles. This will involve a 3D digital foot scan and/or a physical plaster casting, depending on your needs. Once your order is placed, your custom orthotic insoles will be available for pickup within 2 to 3 weeks. You may book a second appointment to have your provider adjust your orthotics if your insoles aren’t fitting in your shoes or feel ill-fitting.
In most cases, yes. Custom orthotics are designed to be removable and can be swapped between similar styles of footwear. However, keep in mind that the shape of the shoe’s toe box and heel cup can affect the fit. For example, you may have a hard time fitting orthotics into a narrow shoe like a Converse or into a shoe where the existing insole is glued down, like some Vans shoes. If you would like to order multiple pairs of insoles for different uses or different types of shoes, just let your provider know. Additional pairs will incur added costs, but you will not have to pay for any further evaluations.
